DHS math teacher David Custer had several enthusiastic students who wanted to start a Cyber-Hacking Club. The group was so eager to get started that one member spent his own money to purchase software for the group! Mr. Custer won a DEF teacher grant to ensure the group had all of the basic tools so everyone could participate. The grant provided the funds to purchase hardware, software and a group of VIP HacktheBox accounts that will enable the club members to compete in “capture the flag” type competitions. The group meets weekly to learn from each other and hone their hacking skills in hopes of competing with other hacking groups around the world. In the short time the group has been meeting, their “hacking” skills have isolated several bugs in systems currently used by different departments within DHS. The site managers were notified, the bugs have been fixed, and the DHS Hacking Club has already prevented identify theft and loss of income for two different organizations after just three months in operation!
