Cultivating Well-Being and Fostering Positive Mental Health

At the Decatur Education Foundation, one of our top priorities is to increase the sense of belonging for Decatur’s youth, which is fundamental for students of all ages and identities. We partner with the City Schools of Decatur and community members like you — Together, we can help our students thrive!

Joe’s Fund

Joe’s Fund is dedicated to supporting student behavioral health in memory of Joe Bodine, a kind and charismatic graduate of Decatur High School who tragically succumbed to addiction. These grants fund projects that address substance abuse, foster positive mental health, and create safe spaces for open dialogue on teen well-being. Since 2021, 154 CSD teachers, staff, and community members have participated in the intensive Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) training through Joe’s Fund.

If you’re interested in learning more about how you can support positive mental health for the youth in Decatur, register for the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). To submit your payment, please visit DEF’s ASIST Payment Portal.

Decatur Student Centers

The Decatur Education Foundation has partnered with the City Schools of Decatur to establish the Decatur Student Centers, safe havens at Decatur High School and Beacon Hill Middle School. The centers address critical mental health challenges faced by our youth, ranging from anxiety and depression to substance abuse. These spaces offer students a respite from the stresses of the school day, providing access to physical resources like snacks and personal hygiene supplies, as well as individual and group sessions with dedicated counselors.

Behavioral Health Grants

Through Joe’s Fund and our Innovation Grants program, DEF supports behavioral health in all of Decatur’s schools. Our grants have facilitated the development of dynamic outdoor play areas, implemented innovative support for neurodiverse learners, such as adaptable seating arrangements, and introduced mindfulness practices in all schools.

Make a donation today to foster positive mental health and support behavioral health initiatives for Decatur’s youth through DEF’s impactful programs and grants. We are grateful for your support!
