DHS basketball athletes had already been training with world-renowned boxing trainer Xavier Biggs, but Coach Faulkner felt like they had more to learn from Biggs through his book, The Sweet Sucker Punch. So Coach wrote a teacher grant for copies of the book for each of his players. The team was required to read the book, have a group discussion, and write a closing reflection that might even be included in the next edition of the book.
Coach Faulkner said, “The goal is for our student-athletes to learn how regardless of the situation or obstacle, a person’s will and desire can help them overcome all things. I think Xavier’s stories of perseverance and triumph over struggles will give our student-athletes hope and understanding both on the court and in life.” Inspiration is everywhere, and DEF has always supported teachers in their efforts to inspire their students.
