DHS’ Career and Technical Students “Belong” at the Georgia Conference

In October, DEF awarded Special Education teacher Marca Tigner a grant that enabled her to take four of her students to attend the annual CTI (Career and Technical Instruction) Fall Leadership Conference in LaGrange, Georgia in the fall. The students attended leadership workshops that emphasized the skills they are developing to enter the workforce upon graduation. The theme of the Conference was “You Belong”, and our DHS students were able to meet and compete with more than 500 students from other Georgia CTI high schools. The students were able to showcase their skills and knowledge in a number of academic bowl competitions in math, current events, language arts, social studies and spelling. DHS student Addison Berlyn Stringer won first place in the Language Arts Academic Quiz Bowl!

“These trips and activities provide our students the opportunity to improve their interpersonal skills, employability skills, sense of self-pride, as well as raise their self-esteem,” said Special Education teacher Marca Tigner. “It’s also a great opportunity to meet other Georgia students from around the state who are just like them.”
