Nominations Now Open For Clarence Strickland & Miles Above Awards
We are now accepting nominations for two of Decatur Education Foundation’s most heartfelt honors—each celebrating individuals in City Schools of Decatur who have gone above and beyond to support students and families through life’s most challenging moments.
- Clarence Strickland Make-a-Difference Award
This award was established by a Decatur family to honor Clarence Strickland, former head custodian at Decatur High School, who helped their child in a time of crisis. It is awarded annually to a CSD employee who has shown exceptional caring and compassion to ensure the well-being and safety of a student in need. - Miles Above Award
Created in 2021 by Sam and Leah Jenness in memory of their son, Miles, this award honors the extraordinary kindness and bravery of his kindergarten teacher, Laura Pitts. After Miles’ tragic passing in 2018, Laura supported both his family and his classmates through grief with remarkable compassion. This annual award is given to a Pre-K–5th grade teacher, paraprofessional, or CSD staff member who goes “miles above” their job description to show extraordinary kindness to a child or family during difficult circumstances—inside or outside the classroom.
WHO SHOULD BE NOMINATED?
If someone in our schools has shown remarkable empathy, stepped up during a crisis, or quietly made a lasting impact on a student or family, we want to hear their story. These awards are about lifting up those who make a difference when it matters most.
Clarence Strickland nominees can be any CSD employee. Miles Above nominees are focused on pre-k through 3rd-grade employees.
