The special education teachers at Renfroe Middle School wanted to provide their students with a meaningful connection to plants and nature. A DEF grant allowed them to partner with Trellis Horticultural Therapy Alliance to create a new curriculum that included sensory-focused activities in the classroom and in the school garden. Students planted terrarium gardens, created nature-inspired art, and made meals using plants they grew. One parent shared, “The soil and plants are so good at calming my daughter. She loved being able to experience them right in her own classroom.”
