The DHS math team wanted to enter more regional and national math competitions, but with entry fees as high as $25 per student, the group lacked the funds. With the help of some seed funds from DEF, the Math Team was able to allow all of their members to participate in the American Mathematics Competition. Since the high school club is looking to increase its membership, they were pleased to have a record 50 students who signed up to take the test! The competition itself is a 25-question multiple-choice test that quantifies the mathematical abilities of high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. It is the first in a series of qualifying tests for the US Math Olympiad Team. Students who do well can earn recognition from colleges, pins and medals, and the opportunity to move on to the next round. This is an awesome opportunity for the students to show their math skills and knowledge, as well as earn recognition for their accomplishments. Thanks to the DEF grant, the club could afford to enter every student who wished to participate in the test. The students’ participation in this competition showcases the math team’s ultimate goal: to bring a love of mathematics for all students at Decatur, and to provide opportunities to showcase their talents.
