We love it when students from different grades come together to share experiences! This spring, seventh-grade teacher Katie English purchased four Spheros through a DEF teacher grant to help bring algebraic equations to life for her students. In the previous year, DHS math teacher Dave Custer had also used funds from a DEF teacher grant to purchase the programmable robotic balls for his AP Computer Science class. The two classes met during the last week of school for some friendly coding competitions. Ms. English’s seventh graders took a field trip to the high school to meet up with the tenth graders. They divided into mixed teams to see which group could be the fastest to maneuver their robots through a series of obstacles. The colorful balls have provided an endless supply of lessons for both age groups, and have shown the students how math can be used with technology in useful (and fun) ways! The Spheros competition was a great way for the students of different ages to connect, and maybe made high school seem a little less intimidating for the visiting seventh graders.
