Behavioral Health
Joe’s Fund
Joe’s Fund is the behavioral health initiative of DEF. It was created by Joe’s mom Lori Heemann, along with other family and friends to honor the life of Joe Bodine, a bright, kind, and charismatic 2015 Decatur High School graduate who lost his battle with addiction in 2016.

ASIST Trainings
In order to make Decatur a more suicide-safe community, CSD utilizes the LivingWorks’ Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) program, an evidence-based suicide intervention model. This program is for “natural helpers” and clinicians, and teaches participants how to recognize and intervene when needed, and to develop a collaborative safety plan to keep someone safe and alive.
This program is open to all adults with special pricing for CSD employees and Decatur community members (anyone who lives or works within Decatur city limits).
Our goal is to raise awareness, create common language, and destigmatize suicidality. Ultimately, our goal is to teach life-saving skills.
To date, almost 200 CSD teachers, staff, and community members have participated in this intensive two-day ASIST training through Joe’s Fund.
Upcoming ASIST Training dates:
October 23rd & 24th, 2025
February 19th & 20th, 2026
March 26th & 27th, 2026
All trainings are held in-person in Decatur, GA from 8 am to 5 pm on both days.
