We hope this correspondence finds you well! In this issue, we'll recap this year's Homecoming Game, update you on current Bulldog athletics and showcase some of the photos from the reunion of the Classes of 1970 and 1971. Twice a year, we'll feature Alumni news, DHS happenings and information about upcoming class reunions. Distinguished Alumni from the Classes of 1969 and 1971 Were Honored at the 2021 DHS Homecoming Game

Decatur Education Foundation was pleased to present its inaugural Distinguished Alumni Awards at this year's Homecoming Game on Friday, September 17, 2021. Class of 1969 alumnus Freddy Bailey and Class of 1971 alumnus Eddie Fowlkes (posthumously) were honored for their tireless dedication to collecting, preserving and displaying many of the schools' artifacts from across the decades. Thanks to Eddie and Freddy, there are display cases in the PAC, the gym and in the schools' hallways that preserve the school's history and its students' accomplishments. Sadly, Eddie passed away in 2016, but his wife and former DHS art teacher Anne Fowlkes accepted his award on his behalf. Athletics Director Rodney Thomas presented the awards to Anne and Freddy on the field right before kick-off.

BULLDOG ATHLETICS STATS

 

Football

The varsity football this year was one of the best that DHS has ever had! They made it to playoffs, won the first eight games of their season and were number one in the region until they lost their last two games.

 

Their overall record was 8-2, and their classification record out of those games was 4-2.

 

The team was even recognized on a city-wide level: Coach Felton won the Atlanta Falcons "Coach of the Week”, and for the first time since 2004, DHS was ranked in the AJC’s top 10 GA high school football teams in the 5A classification. 

 

Volleyball

The varsity volleyball team finished fourth in region 5-5A, allowing them to advance to the first round of state playoffs.

 

Softball

The varsity softball team was strong and successful this year, with an overall record of 9-3 and a conference record of 5-3.

 

Cross Country

The varsity cross country team won states! The boys’ team finished first overall, becoming the 2021 Class 5A State Champions. Senior Christian Gonzalez was the State Champion, and juniors Billy Carlton and Jake Westing also made Top 10 in third and ninth place, respectively. The girls’ team placed fourth overall, with junior Gabriella Malerba finishing in the Top 10.
