Why We Support DEF

We believe that by enriching the lives of local children in need, we will strengthen the community as a whole. We made a gift specifically to support summer opportunities so that other parents in our community can breathe easier, knowing their children are in safe and fun learning environments.

Investing in the Fine Arts

I give to the Decatur Education Foundation through payroll deduction because DEF has been so generous to the Decatur High School fine arts in their Teacher Innovation Grants. Thanks to the DEF, we’ve gotten additional sheet music to sing, handbells to supplement our performances, pianos for use throughout the DHS performing arts center, and great choir microphones which have amplified musicians at graduation, concerts, the spring musical, and even the marching band this past year. In short, the Decatur Education Foundation has given us a song to sing, bells to ring, and microphones so more ears can hear the great work of the CSD students.

The Best of DHS

The Decatur Education Foundation scholarships are a wonderful—and needed—addition to our school. Students and faculty look at them as a sign of honor and recognition and value them greatly. Even more, they provide much needed assistance to our students, giving them college/career access and support as they use the preparation they received at City Schools of Decatur. Finally, a most important quality is that the DEF scholarship recipients have reflected the unique and special diversity of Decatur. The scholarship is a symbol of the best that is Decatur High School.

An Investment in Our Community

The biggest reason we support the DEF is that it is an investment in our community. We have chosen for our kids to attend our local public schools because we believe our kids are getting an excellent education while also experiencing true diversity. When we donate our time or money to DEF causes, we know it is being used for something tangible that will truly help a student succeed in life.

Student Assistance

“The specific needs associated with transitional (homeless) students and other students in need are multidimensional and can have a profound effect on the areas of their physical health, psychological development, and academic achievement. School systems alone do not have the ability to address all the issues faced by at-risk students and their families. DEF responds to CSD requests for student assistance and provides generous financial support. As a result, the multiple needs of students and their families continue to be met, bringing them closer to attaining stability and academic success!”

Support for Small and Big Initiatives

“DEF’s magic recipe is that it supports small things that make a big difference as well as larger strategic initiatives. Whether it’s the pair of glasses for a girl who needs them to read, a grant to ensure that all kids can take advantage of enriching summer adventures or funding big collaborations in the arts, technology and sciences, DEF is there with ideas, support and funding.”

Teacher Innovation

“Decatur Education Foundation supports special projects that make our schools stand apart from the rest. They allow teachers to imagine and implement innovative and creative projects that inspire students. Teachers who have access to resources are more likely to ask, ‘what is possible?’ Thanks to the DEF, our teachers don’t ask ‘whether’ but ‘how.'”
