There’s an App for That!
The students at Winnona Park are experiencing a new form of technology, thanks to a grant funded by Decatur Education Foundation. The students pictured here are using iPads to strengthen their skills in math, reading, writing, and even fine motor skills! The applications available to support these skills are endless and have proven to be especially beneficial in tracking progress and promoting independence in ESS students. Students can keep track of their reading fluency through the Timed Reading app, and can practice counting coins and making change on the Coin Math app. Several students are using the Dexteria app, which was designed by an occupational therapist to support fine motor skills in students who are weak in that area. Recently the iPads were used for an ESOL student from Denmark, who spoke no English. Using a translation app, the teacher and students were able to communicate freely. The Winnona Park students and staff have truly embraced the iPads as a part of their daily activities at school.
